Black History Month

February is Black History Month. This is a time to remember, celebrate and honor the contributions that Black Americans have given to America. As we recognize what these great Americans have done it makes us proud to be part of a country with such strength and diversity.

Mostly, this month is used to revisit the words of some of our great civic leaders like Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglas and Thurgood Marshall. It is important to remember, when we think of these great leaders in history, that social change has never come about solely through isolated efforts of a handful of great men or women. Instead, the causes of equality and injustice have always been advanced through the collective efforts of vast numbers of civic leaders working together for change. We must keep in mind that as heroic as these individuals may be, we need to be careful not to dismiss the power we each possess to bring about change in the world.

This point is made in a book called Everyone Leads, by Paul Schmitz. He argues that the civil rights movement in America is really a story of collective effort by large numbers of empowered citizens. For example, soon after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat at the front of a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala., Dr. King was brought to the community to lead a bus boycott. He played an important role, but make no mistake about it: That bus boycott was only successful because the entire Black population of Montgomery refused to ride a bus — a tremendous sacrifice and inconvenience! — for more than a year. Segregated busing came to end because the entire Black community led — not just Ms. Parks and Dr. King.

When we think about the famous 1963 March On Washington, the first thing that comes to mind for most of us is Dr. King’s prophetic, iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. However, it is important to remember that a key reason why that speech has become so iconic is because it was delivered in front of a vast crowd of 200,000 individuals, all of whom earned the title of “civic leader” through the efforts they made to take a personal stand for jobs and freedom.

It is important to note that the story of how that crowd was rallied provides an important glimpse into the reality of social change. The march was organized by A. Phillip Randolph, President of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car porters — the first predominantly Black union. Once the decision was made to hold the rally, the organizers had just seven weeks to plan the program and turn out a crowd. Randolph knew exactly who to turn to: Bayard Rustin. It is safe to say that Rustin does not have the same level of name recognition today as MLK, but be was absolutely essential to the success of the march. He was Black, gay, socialist — and the most universally respected community organizer among African Americans of that era. The goal was 100,000 attendees, and in just seven weeks Rustin succeeded at turning out twice that number — with only the telephone, telegraph, and snail mail as his communication tools. No email, texts or Facebook.

So the next time you summon that image of Dr. King speaking from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, make sure you “zoom out” to focus not just on the brilliant speaker at the podium, but also on the huge crowd of citizens gathered on the national mall. Remember that Bayard Rustin gathered that crowd, as well as 200,000 civic leaders who were personally committed to standing for jobs and freedom. From this perspective, it’s clear that it took far more than a speech by Dr. King to put the “Great” in the “Great March on Washington”.

As we look back on Black History this month, let us remember that it is the choices that we make today that will create the history of tomorrow. Let us rise to the challenge of confronting the civil right issues of today, working with all those who seek to advance the Dream In Our Own Era!

To achieve our Dream ‘A New Contract’, CWA Members must stand shoulder- to- shoulder with a vast group of leaders committed to make a stand for the middle class, our jobs and justice. Together, we will write a new chapter in Union History.

Redbox, Verizon Streaming Movies

Betting that a combination of Internet streaming and kiosk DVD rentals can give consumers the most complete package in a fractured media landscape, Redbox and Verizon are teaming on a movie rental service to launch in the second half of this year.

The still-unnamed business will challenge Netflix by offering a combination of streaming video on digital devices along with rentals from Redbox’s more than 35,000 kiosks for a flat monthly fee… Read More!

I am a retired member of CWA. I speak from my experience of 44 years with ATT, New York Tel, Bell Atlantic, Nynex and Verizon. I have other names for them now but I don’t want to use them.

I attended the King St. rally for our fired members and I was happy there were about 300 est. people there. With all due respect to our members and other unions and our speakers and leaders with more attending we might have had press coverage instead of just police coverage.

What is needed to wake up and wise up our members?? This will be the most important contract you will experience because it is a part of the total war on unionism across the country.

Sometimes sacrifices have to be made like saying NO!! to your manager in order to attend a rally.

The company watches what we do and they have many spies to report back to them if they feel we are divided in our efforts. They watch every vote and decisions we make for the same reason.

Instead of the dumb e-mails, take the time to write to our politicians and tell them to get off their asses and do the job they are paid to do. A little effort goes a long way. But if you don’t do anything, don’t expect anything.

Keep up the pressure and good work my CWA sisters and brothers…

The CWA King Street Rally

Last night, as the night grew closer and a cold chill came in the air, our CWA Members gathered at King Street in support of our Bargaining Team and the fired CWA Members.

The rally brought a crowd of apx. 200-300 with Members from Locals 1101, 1103, TWU, UCATS and Occupy Wall Street. It was also great to see 1101 retirees in the crowd.

CWA 1101 has two Members that remain fired after the strike. One of those Members, Rich Corrigan, works at King Street in Manhattan and the second Member, David Ramos, works at Jerome Ave. in the Bronx.

Rich Corrigan spoke and said he did absolutely nothing wrong to have been fired and that Verizon has chosen to continue the battle even though they have no proof of any wrong doing. David Ramos spoke and thanked the Members for all their financial help and their continued support.

The Rally was also attended by many friends of CWA as well as elected officials, Senator Tom Duane and NYC Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio. Both speakers said that we, the Members of CWA, can count on their ‘full support in this battle to save the middle class’.

District 1 VP Chris Shelton said “I will not sign a contract until the dismissals are brought to arbitration and both 1101 Members are made whole. Verizon is like every other large corporation in America and every other employer. They’re trying to take away our democracy, they’re trying to take away the voice of unions, because the voice for unions is the voice for working people, it’s the voice of the middle class in this country”.

A retried 1101 Member came up to me after the rally and asked, “where is everybody? I thought there would be a lot more Members at this rally. Don’t they understand that we’re in a fight for our lives? Verizon watches these rallies to see how much support we have and this isn’t what they need to see. This kind of turnout isn’t going to get us a good contract”. I later thanked him for coming to the rally and showing his support.

If we are going to win these battles with Verizon, both for a new contract and to make our Members whole, we need HUNDREDS of MEMBERS to ATTEND the RALLIES and SHOW OUR OVERWHELMING UNITY!

Remember: United We Win – Divided We Fall!

King Street Rally Friday February 3 @ 5:30

Friday, February 3 at 5:30pm
84 King Street

Between Hudson & Varick

The company is making billions, paying its top executives tens of millions of dollars a year, paying $0 in federal corporate income taxes, and getting tax rebates.

Meanwhile they’re determined to eliminate our job security, cut our benefits, slash our pensions, and destroy the good union jobs we’ve fought for over the years. Verizon fired 80 members after the strike. 40 are still fired, including two 1101 members, one from 84 King St and one from 2885 Jerome Ave in the Bronx.

Join us at a contract rally on Feb 3 to tell Verizon it’s time to negotiate a good contract, and time to bring back the members who are still on the street.

CWA Bargaining Updates-Local 1105 & 1106 Tapes

1105 Tape
Monday January 30, 2012, 2:30 pm
A message from Keith Edwards….
Tape Number: 718-904-1105

Bargaining continued all last week with the Company responding to our data request for up to date information on: headcounts, call volumes and contractor expenses for the CSSC, MSSC, BSBC, EVRC and FSC. These are the five (5) departments that the Company wants to include in their call sharing proposal.

Verizon also gave us their proposals on wages for the first time. The offer was absolutely disgusting, and disrespectful to all members who work hard everyday to make Verizon profitable. It is pure greed by a Company that hates their employees and has a distain for this Union.

Verizon offered 0% (zero ) the first year, 1% (one) the second and third year while still demanding medical premiums, freezing pensions and 5 days for absences.

This is the same greedy maggot corporation that paid NO federal taxes and received a 1.3 BILLION in TAX REFUNDS. That means that we, the middle class, which Verizon is trying to destroy subsidized Verizon with our tax money. ONLY IN AMERICA!

This is why we need all members to continue to mobilize and give us 4 (four) hours a week to picket wireless stores, train stations and locations on your lunch hours.

We also need all members to call their Assembly members at (518) 455-4100 and State Senators at (518) 455-2800 and urge them to join Assembly member Cahill and Senator Peralta as co-sponsors of A175/S75 to push through the New York Call Center bill. This legislation would create major barriers to moving call center work out of New York State.

Please keep in touch with this tape on 718 904-1105 And Remember In Unity There is Strength!!!!!

CWA 1106 Tape

Wednesday, January 25, 2011

This is President Jerry Bulzomi.

I would like to thank the 150 members who showed up at the rally in front of the Jamaica C.O. last night. But, where were the other 1,000 members?

If you think that if you bury your head we’re going to get a contract, you’re wrong! Remember, when you no longer have medical benefits, bury your head. Let the 150 deal with it. When you don’t get anymore raises because the company already thinks that you’re over paid, bury your head. Let the 150 deal with it. When you don’t get sick time anymore and don’t get paid for it, bury your head. Let the 150 deal with it.

When are you going to understand that if you don’t involved & take your head of your ass & make some sacrifices we are no longer just talking about a contract. We are talking about survival.

There will be a Membership Meeting January 31st. Remember, there is no overtime on Membership Meeting nights.

There will be a Budget Meeting on February 8th. The only thing that can be discussed at the Budget Meeting is the budget.
