6 Ways to Get Ready for the May 1st GENERAL STRIKE

By Occupy Wall Street March 11, 2012

On March 10th, 60,000 marched on Madison to mark the one-year anniversary of the passage of Governor Scott Walker’s drastic dismantling of collective bargaining rights for public employees. Last year, Walker’s attacks on labor rights sparked massive protests that saw hundreds of thousands occupy the Wisconsin capital building. Their actions prefigured Occupy Wall Street and inspired countless others to take a stand against economic inequality, political injustice, and the tyranny of the 1% enforced through politicians and banksters alike.

This is just one example that people across the globe are actively resisting attacks on the 99%. This year has already seen the largest-ever strike on record in India, hundreds of thousands marching for democracy in Bahrain, general strikes in Montreal and Spain where students once again occupied public space in protest of the austerity measures and spending cuts being enforced by the European banking elite, massive uprisings in the streets of Moscow, and more. Even in the United States, the movement grows. The corporate media claims that Occupy’s strength is waning, but they are merely in denial. During the coldest months of this year, the United States has already seen more revolutionary momentum than it has in decades.

This winter, we refocused our energies on fostering ties with local communities, saving homes from corrupt banks and jobs from greedy corporations, and building and expanding our horizontal infrastructure. This #GlobalSpring, we will take the streets again. On May 1st, Occupy Wall Street has called for a General Strike. We are calling on everyone who supports the cause of economic justice and true democracy to take part: No Work, No School, No Housework, No Shopping, No Banking – and most importantly, TAKE THE STREETS!

Here is just a taste of events in the works for New York City:

  • 8am-4pm: Midtown action staging zone in Bryant Park.
  • Disruptive actions in midtown all day! Hit the 1% where they live and prevent them from getting to work. Let’s make this a Day Without the 1%, as well!
  • Family friendly, free food, a really, REALLY free market, skillshares, workshops, lectures, art, fun and more!
  • 4pm: March to Union Square for solidarity march
  • 5:30pm: Solidarity march from Union Square to Wall St.
  • 7pm: March to staging area for evening actions

Verizon Day of Action: March 22

March 22, 2012 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM @ 140 West Street

Verizon has made tens of billions in profits and its top executives walked away with $283 million in the last four years. But when it comes to the 45,000 workers who made Verizon’s success possible, suddenly the company cries broke.

Verizon has sent thousands of American jobs overseas and wants to outsource even more jobs, gut pensions, charge current and retired employees thousands of dollars more for health benefits, and cut disability benefits for workers injured during their jobs.

On March 22, CWA and IBEW workers and thousands of others will be rallying around the country to support good jobs and the U.S. Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act.

Stop Verizon’s Shenanigans

Cable and wireless companies are getting into bed together. And it’s bad news for the rest of us.

Verizon has struck a backroom deal with a cartel of cable companies — including Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications — to stop competing against one another and instead divvy up the spoils of the growing mobile market. And they’re keeping mum on the details of this arrangement.

Whether you use a mobile phone or a desktop to access the Internet, this secret deal poses a threat to anyone wanting online communications to be affordable and open to all. The public must know the specifics about these shenanigans — and the FCC should block any deal that harms consumers.

Tell the FCC to expose Verizon’s backroom shenanigans.

Verizon is already the largest wireless provider in a consolidated market. If there’s no competition to keep carriers in check, prices will continue to spiral upwards and services will decline. If this deal goes through, the cable giants will hand Verizon a giant chunk of the public airwaves, or spectrum, allowing it to grow even bigger while its wireless competitors wither away.

In return, Verizon will promise not to eat into the cable cartel’s broadband business.

This is nasty stuff. These companies are meeting — like the five families in The Godfather — to discuss how to divide up our Internet connections and to stop competing with each other. They’re carving up the Internet without disclosing their plans to any of us.

If this deal goes through, the United States will fall even farther behind on every global measure of broadband access, speed and affordability. Sky-high wireless and broadband bills will rise even higher, even if you’re not a Verizon or cable cartel customer. And even fewer people will be able to afford Internet access.

Tell the FCC it must expose these agreements and stop this deal.

These companies aren’t talking about trading sports players back and forth. The product they’re trading is our very ability to access information and engage in our democracy. This translates into a sacrifice of the open Internet.

There’s more. In just a few years more of us will get online with our mobile phones than with a desktop or laptop. If this deal goes through, Verizon will have an unprecedented amount of control over what we access online, and how.

Do you really want Verizon to have that kind of power? Tell the FCC to shine a light on Verizon’s shady backroom deal.

The future of the Internet is too important to be left to a handful of giant companies. Make sure the FCC hears from you before it’s too late.

Regional Bargaining Report # 53

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

CWA District 1/IBEW Local 2213 and IBEW New England Regional Committees have been meeting at the RyeTown Hilton in Rye, NY for the last nine months. CWA District 2-13/ IBEW Mid Atlantic Regional Committees have been at the same hotel since September. Since, the beginning of the year the meetings have been back “on the record”. Prior to these meeting, we spent weeks in “off the record” discussions in Sub Committees focusing on several major areas of our collective bargaining agreements trying to get the company to move off of their retrogressive demands. Unfortunately there is very little progress to report.

The Company shows no interest in any of our proposals and shows no concern for our issues. Verizon’s goal is to strip you of your benefits, your job security, your pension, your work rules and much more.

Verizon seems hell-bent on destroying the middle class jobs CWA and IBEW have fought so hard to create over the last 50 years of collective bargaining.

Obviously, the company has not heard us and We need to take the fight to a new level.

It is more important than ever that our members continue to mobilize and that EVERY member commit to spending 4 hours per week participating in mobilization activities.

On March 22nd Join the Fight for Good Jobs – Stand up to Corporate Greed!

Now more than ever we need to mobilize!

Mobilize! – Mobilize! – Mobilize!

In his capacity as the first CWA President, Joe Beirne took great pride in the roles he played in the fields of education and learning and other areas of social concern. On April 26, 1999, the CWA Executive Board voted to combine the Joseph Anthony Beirne Memorial Foundation and the Ray Hackney Scholarship Fund, thereby creating the CWA Joe Beirne Foundation. Read more about Joseph Beirne.

Applicants must be high school graduates or at least high school students who will graduate during the year in which they apply. We Won’t Stand For Union Busting—Not At Verizon Wireless; Not At Verizon

Our fight for a fair contract is about good jobs for Verizon workers – all Verizon workers.

Verizon’s actions at Verizon Wireless make it clear that what the company wants is to tear down the standard of living for union workers while preventing other workers from joining the union.

We continue to stand up for the 99% around the country, fighting for free and open union elections and making sure corporations engage in fair contract negotiations.

Verizon Bargaining Report #61

March 2, 2012

The Mid-Atlantic bargaining team met in Rye New York this week with the Company and presented a counter-proposal that addressed call center work, absence, the Medical Restriction Policy, transfers, benefits and many other items that remain outstanding. The Company response to this proposal showed a lack of interest and concern to the bargaining priorities of CWA and IBEW.

The greed continued to overflow this week when the Company counter-proposals demanded that we give up benefits, in order to save this Company millions and millions of dollars. When questioned, their response to our proposal as well as several other Company proposals that demand concessions, the Company struggled to explain how these demands would be handled in our different locals. They requested time to look into their proposals and will respond to us at a later time. Bargaining has recessed until next week.

Active and Local members need to continue mobilization activities. Preparations are in place for the upcoming National Day of Action and all should make arrangements to participate in planned events.

Keep up the fight each day in every location and stay strong.

CWA says “No Secret Deals” As Redacted Documents Filed By Verizon and Four Cable Providers Fail to Provide FCC and Public Critical Information about the Deal

Washington, D.C. — The Communications Workers of America today filed supplemental comments with the Federal Communications Commission asking the agency to “stop the clock” on consideration of the Verizon/cable company transaction until the parties involved provide the Commission with full and complete copies of their related commercial agreements.

In demanding the release of unredacted versions of Joint Marketing Agreements between Verizon Wireless and the four cable companies — Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, and Bright House Networks — the CWA noted that the documents are essential to shed light on competitive concerns related to the proposed sale under consideration by the FCC…
