CWA Outraged Over VZ Exec Statement

Aug 20, 2011

Union Outraged by Verizon Exec’s Statement

Washington, D.C. We are disappointed to see this quote from Marc Reed, Verizon’s Executive Vice President for Human Resources, that the company hoped “to convince the unions to begin bargaining with us in good faith.”  It is both inaccurate and insulting. We agreed with management not to claim victory in changing the process, reinstituting the contract or shaping our goals.  We will live by that commitment.

But Reed’s comment if not retracted means that we will be prepared to fight and fight hard whenever necessary if Verizon believes it can resume negotiations on that basis.  We were encouraged by millions of Americans at our side in the fight for bargaining rights, middle class jobs and a decent standard of living. We thank them for their support.

Following is the unions’ original statement.

CWA, IBEW Reach Agreement on Bargaining with Verizon; Members to Return to Work Tuesday, August 23

Washington, D.C. – Members of CWA and IBEW at Verizon Communications will return to work on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at which time the contract will be back in force for an indefinite period.

We have reached agreement with Verizon on how bargaining will proceed and how it will be restructured. The major issues remain to be discussed, but overall, issues now are focused and narrowed.

We appreciate the unity of our members and the support of so many in the greater community. Now we will focus on bargaining fairly and moving forward.

CWA and IBEW represent 45,000 workers at Verizon covered by this contract from Virginia to New England.

Verizon’s Striking Union-Represented Employees to Return to Work

Verizon New York – August 20, 2011

Verizon Communications today announced that its 45,000 wireline employees in nine Northeastern states and the District of Columbia who are represented by the CWA and IBEW will return to work beginning Monday night, Aug. 22, without new collective bargaining agreements.

Verizon and the unions have made headway in negotiating a number of local and regional issues, and the parties have agreed on a process for moving forward to negotiate the major issues regarding benefits, cost structure, work flexibility and job security.
Verizon said the wireline employees now on strike would be working under the terms of the contracts that expired on Saturday, Aug. 6.  The contracts will be extended with no specific deadline for achieving new collective bargaining agreements so that the parties can take the time required to resolve the critical issues.

Marc Reed, Verizon’s executive vice president of human resources, said, “We agreed to end the strike because we believe that is in the best interest of our customers and our employees.  We remain committed to our objectives, and we look forward to negotiating the important issues that are integral to the future health of Verizon’s wireline business.”

He added:  “We are grateful to our management team for their leadership during the past 14 days in so ably meeting the needs of our customers.  The team’s competence, dedication and hard work enabled us to withstand the strike without significant disruption to customer service, and to convince the unions to begin bargaining with us in good faith.  The fortitude and efforts of our managers have proven to be our strongest point of leverage in bargaining.  We are pleased that during this stressful economic period our union-represented employees will be back at work earning good wages and benefits while serving our customers.”

With its union-represented employees back at work, Verizon plans to quickly address any backlog in repairs and unfulfilled requests for service.
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, NASDAQ:VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to consumer, business, government and wholesale customers.  Verizon Wireless operates America’s most reliable wireless network, with more than 106 million total connections nationwide.  Verizon also provides converged communications, information and entertainment services over America’s most advanced fiber-optic network, and delivers integrated business solutions to customers in more than 150 countries, including all of the Fortune 500.  A Dow 30 company, Verizon employs a diverse workforce of nearly 196,000 and last year generated consolidated revenues of $106.6 billion.

Regional Bargaining Report # 36

Friday, August 19, 2011   10 PM

CWA District 1/IBEW Local 2213 and IBEW New England Local Committees met with the company today at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye, NY. The Union continued to talk about our issues and demanded that the company respond to our demands. The Company did respond by bringing in a “Subject Matter Expert” who discussed various aspects of our proposal and indicated that the company would take another look at some portions of our proposal. It was the first sign that anyone in the company was even listing to our demands. We are schedule to meet again with the Company’s “Subject Matter Expert” tomorrow. We also asked the company to bring in other “Subject Matter Experts” to discuss other areas of our proposals.

We reminded the company that this is the 13th day of the strike and that our members and their employees are demanding that we continue to bargain by addressing our proposals and not just the company’s proposals to reach a fair contract. The Company must continue to bring to the table those “Subject Matter Experts” who understand the union’s proposals and are able to address them.
