Reginal Bargaining Report #14

CWA District 1/IBEW Local 2213 and IBEW New England Regional Teams met with the Company today at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye, NY. Discussions centered on Absence. It was apparent to your bargaining Committee that Verizon did not come to the table to have a serious discussion. Management was strongly reminded that the contract expires in a little more than a week and that the time for them to get serious is NOW!!!

All employees in the East were greeted by Marc Reed’s letter this morning. After reading it one could easily come away with the mistaken belief that Verizon is financially struggling. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! While Mr. Reed is correct that Verizon has invested more than $20 billion on FiOS since 2008, he fails to mention that it was our members work that provided the profits used to enter into Wireless and FiOS and it is our members who, everyday, deliver the quality service their customers demand. We will continue to remind Management of these facts when discussions resume tomorrow.

Thousands of CWA and IBEW members and retirees will be at this Saturday’s Rally at 11AM at Verizon headquarters at 140 West Street in New York City. If you haven’t already made your arrangements contact your Steward or Local to sign up.  Remember to wear RED!!!

And don’t forget, tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27th, CWA will host a virtual union hall meeting on Verizon East Bargaining and Mobilization. You will hear from Districts Vice President Chris Shelton and Ed Mooney, IBEW Local 827 President Bill Huber, and IBEW T-6 Chairperson Myles Calvey on what is happening at the table and how we are fighting back.   RSVP to join tomorrow’s call at 7PM EDT and urge your co-workers do so, too.   You can sign up for the call now by going to:   http://www.cwaaction.org or text VZCALL to 69866.    We want to make sure that everyone is on this call.

CWA Continues To Expand Efforts To Cut Costs

1101 delegates at the 73rd CWA Convention. Click on the photo to view the photo gallery

by Claire Richter

Difficult economic times are calling for strong measures in both government & corporations throughout the country. The concept of shared-sacrifice has not only affected workers’ pay & benefits but also the Unions that represent them.  With a more diversified and shrinking membership, Unions are now combining officer posts as well as transferring funds to be more effective and efficient in their fight for workers rights.

The Communications Workers of America recently held its 73rd Convention in Las Vegas during which CWA delegates agreed to cut costs through a variety of measures. They removed one of the top three officer positions when Jeff Rechenback, the CWA Secretary-Treasurer, retired and the position of Vice President was eliminated. V.P. Annie Hill, was then elected to succeed Rechenback as the new Secretary-Treasurer and two regional vice president positions were combined.

Most important was an acknowledgement of the ever-shrinking membership and job losses felt by unions throughout America. To this end, CWA delegates voted for a more efficient use of dues that flow to the Strategic Industry Fund for specific projects. These funds will now go towards assisting Locals and the National to meet their daily expenses and will also result in each Local receiving an additional $20 per member for each of the next two years.

Lastly, in a nod to advancements in technology and everyday communications, CWA conventions will be held every two years creating additional savings for its members.

It is hoped that these measures will ease some of the financial strain being felt by Locals as well as the National and also streamline CWA in its future battles for workers rights and benefits for all its members.

Historic March For Jobs For Justice Set For Aug. 27 On The National Mall

A massive march for jobs and justice on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., will cap an action-filled August as CWA members and allies nationwide fight for workers at town hall meetings, rallies and festivals.

The Aug. 27 march, being called “From the Emancipator (Lincoln) to the Liberator (King),” takes place one day before the unveiling of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial on the National Mall.

In a resolution at the CWA convention last week, delegates endorsed the march and are urging members to take part. Fellow unions, civil rights groups, social justice networks, clergy and other progressive organizations are involved in the event, being coordinated by the National Action Network.

The weekend of the march also marks the 48th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the Mall. “For those who may be quick to forget the legacy of Dr. King, let us remember that he died while fighting for workers’ rights and the basic human dignity of all,” Rev. Al Sharpton said.

In connection with the march, the AFL-CIO will host a national symposium one day earlier on “The American Dream: Jobs and Justice,” honoring King and the vital connection between workers’ and civil rights. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.

The National Mall events will begin with a noon rally Saturday, Aug. 27, at Constitution Avenue and 17th Street, with a march to the new MLK memorial at 1:30 p.m.

Labor News For East Associates From Verizon

Tell Verizon No Give Backs! Be at the Rally on July 30th, 140 West Street @ 11:00 am.

Dear East Associate Employee,

As you know, Verizon and leaders of the CWA and IBEW are negotiating new collective bargaining agreements to replace the contracts that will expire Aug. 6. While we face difficult issues in these negotiations, we are committed to achieving agreements that will continue to provide a great place to work.

Our Verizon Credo calls for us to communicate openly, candidly and directly. It is in that spirit that I am writing to you. We all recognize that dramatic change has occurred in our industry and the marketplace, and that the realities of today’s business environment are vastly different from those when current contracts were negotiated in 2008. Consumers are cutting the cord, competition in voice, broadband and video is increasing, and the overall U.S. economy is sputtering.

Earlier this year we had meetings with Union leaders to discuss the major shifts that have occurred in the industry and some of the financial and operational challenges we face. We can’t ignore the facts. While Wireless is a profitable business, Wireline is fighting to reverse a ten-year decline in profitability which reflects the loss of more than 50 percent of its lines. As reported in our public financial statements, the reality is that virtually all of Verizon’s earnings are attributable to Wireless.

This is despite the fact we have made tremendous investments for growth in the Wireline business. In fact, no other competitor in the Telecom markets we serve has invested more capital for revenue growth and expansion than Verizon. Since 2008, Verizon has invested more than $20 billion to build and market our industry-leading FiOS broadband and video products; improve our systems for billing, sales and services; upgrade our fleet and physical facilities; and maintain and improve our copper network. Through these investments and the quality work of our employees, we have created a business with an outstanding reputation for value and service. In FiOS, we have established a brand identity that is unsurpassed in the market.

The big question we must answer together is how do we enable Telecom to thrive?

In order for Telecom to become a vibrant, growing business, deep-rooted issues need to be addressed. Our substantial investments have Telecom moving in the right direction, but they will not solve for embedded work-rule requirements that drive up costs and hamstring operational flexibility. We realize there will be differing opinions about how to turn Telecom into a more successful and profitable business, and these opinions will be raised in the course of contract negotiations. However, what we must not spend time debating are the facts about the Wireline business; the pressures we face from economic, competitive and technology forces; or the need to achieve meaningful change to provide Telecom with the opportunity to thrive.

We have a mutual interest and desire to ensure a strong future for Telecom. That will require that we tackle the tough issues, such as a legacy cost structure driven, in part, by the growing cost of benefits. Did you know that the average expense of benefits per year for an East associate is about $50,000 – almost equal to the average U.S. household income?

One of the expense items contributing to our overall benefit cost is the high cost of medical coverage for our East associates. Our legacy health plans are not market competitive and the fragmented plan designs and vendors across the regions have prevented us from effectively leveraging our spend to help lower cost and improve the quality of healthcare delivery. Our vision to better manage the growing cost of healthcare is to have consistent plans across the enterprise, which we can leverage to drive cost and quality.

We also must address restrictive work rules that are out-of-step with delivering timely and efficient customer service. These issues place Verizon at a competitive disadvantage, something we must address in these negotiations for Telecom to be a healthy and thriving business for employees, customers and shareowners.

Verizon is committed to investing in Telecom in support of an unwavering belief in our strategy and in the ability and talents of our employees to fulfill that vision. We believe we can and will transform our Telecom business to produce profitable revenue growth and net income.

We are committed to productive discussions with union leaders regarding these issues. By addressing these business realities while balancing Verizon’s commitment to provide good jobs, wages and benefits, we can build a strong future for the Telecom business. We appreciate all you do every day to serve our customers.

Sincerely,

Marc Reed
Executive Vice President

VZ Virtual Union Hall Bargaining Call

On Wednesday, July 27, CWA will host a virtual union hall meeting on Verizon East bargaining and mobilization.

We’ll hear from District Vice Presidents Chris Shelton and Ed Mooney, IBEW Local 827 President Bill Huber, and IBEW T-6 Chairman Myles Calvey on what’s happening at the table and how we’re fighting back.

RSVP now to join the call on Wednesday, July 27, at 7 PM EDT: Sign up for the call.

Verizon is on the attack and is gunning for almost every protection we have as union workers and retirees: Wage progression, overtime protections, pensions, health care, disability, sick leave, holidays, and much more.

Despite earning $19.5 billion in profits and paying out $258 million to its top 5 execs in the last 4 years, this company wants to gut the collective bargaining agreements we’ve negotiated over more than 60 years. We’re not going to let that happen.

Mobilization takes every one of us. Join the call on Wednesday at 7 PM EDT to hear what’s happening and what we need to win this fight.

In solidarity,

Larry Cohen

P.S. Get on the bus! If you haven’t signed up for transportation to the July 30th rally in New York City, contact your steward or local right away. There will be thousands of CWA and IBEW members from across the East region. You won’t want to miss this event!

Regional Bargaining Report #12: No Contracting

CWA District 1/IBEW Local 2213 Regional and Local Bargaining Teams met with the Company today at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye, NY.  The Regional Committee made a comprehensive presentation on Contracting which included examples of all types of work– from all bargaining units.  The Unions demanded that this work, being performed by several thousand contractors in the U.S. and off shore, be returned to our members.  They emphasized to Verizon that the return of contracted jobs is a major issue for the Unions.

The Local Teams met throughout the day and into the evening on issues relating to their work rules and working conditions.  The Local Teams are scheduled to resume discussions tomorrow and the Regional Team will resume their discussions on Monday.

With just one week to go before the July 30, 2011 Rally scheduled for Verizon headquarters at 140 West Street in New York City, locals should be doing everything necessary to ensure that as many members, retirees and family members possible attend.  We will be joined by Verizon employees from several areas of the country who will be standing with us as we get the message out that we are more committed than we have ever been to fight to protect our wages, benefits and working conditions and also that we will not forget our retirees.

Now more that ever we need to mobilize!

Verizon Workers To Take Strike Vote July 25 (video)

by: Teresa Albano

Verizon workers represented by Communications Workers of America will vote on July 25 whether they would strike or not if the union and management cannot come to agreement on a new contract.

Union leaders say the corporation’s proposal is a huge step backwards for active workers and retirees. The proposal shifts thousands of dollars of expenses onto workers’ and retirees’ backs in health care, wages and other benefits hard-won over the last five decades, like double time on Sundays and night differentials… Read the full story here.
